What the What? Manziel to the AAF and The Weird Week Six Weekend!
Week Six saw the fall of the Apollos! The addition of Johnny Manziel to the AAF! Nearly forty penalties in the first two games alone! And Much More!
Laundry Day
In the two games on Saturday, 37 penalties were called, according to the box scores on noextrapoints.com. Those penalties added up to 403 yards. That is four complete trips up and down the field. Yikes that is sloppy. Perhaps the worst of all the penalties came at the expense of the Apollos: a false start penalty that resulted in a ten-second runoff that ended the game.
Fumble Festival
Salt Lake and Memphis combined to lose five fumbles on Saturday. Additional fumbles were recovered by the fumblers. Another sloppy game, that went to the Stallions, 22-9. Memphis finds itself with the worst record in the league, with only four games remaining. Is there hope on the way? See below. 9
Money Moves
Johnny Manziel has signed with the Memphis Express. This was a highly controversial move, as AAF Twitter was polarized by the move. The hope here is that this will be the chance that helps Manziel turn over a new leaf. At a minimum, it should sell some more tickets for the Express, who have struggled with attendance at times this season.
Undefeated No More
The Hotshots came in Orlando and played with a purpose. Their defensive scheme was spot-on, and they did not allow a sack, and committed no turnovers. Still, they only won 22-17, and if the Apollos would have lined up correctly on the last play of the game, the Hotshots may not have been victorious. The final play saw the Apollos get flagged for a false start penalty (rightly so). This led to the aforementioned ten second runoff, which ended the game. Prior to the penalty, the Apollos were in striking distance of the end zone. Kudos to Arizona though, as they did enough to win the game.
Taking Command
Interceptions and a punt return touchdown led to another dominant first half for the Commanders. They continued to pour it on in the second half, defeating the Legends 37-6. Aaron Murray was abysmal for the Legends, throwing three interceptions and eventually getting benched. The Legends show promise over the last couple of weeks, but looked lost out there against the Commanders.
Ironing Things Out
Birmingham figured out how to throw the ball! The Iron were last in the AAF in yards per game coming in to the weekend. Embattled starter Luis Perez came in for an injured Keith Price to throw for over 350 yards and two touchdowns, handing the Fleet their first home loss. San Diego turned the ball over three times, leading to the Iron victory, 32-29.
Looking Ahead
Week 7 gives the Apollos the chance to clinch a playoff spot,as the East is quickly becoming a two horse race. All games are in-conference games, so the playoff picture will either get much clearer, or will get nice and muddy, depending on the winners. The West is especially unsettled in this regard. Here are the current league standings:
Tuesday I'll have my first Power Rankings and Wednesday I will have my picks for week 7! (Hopefully I'll do better this weekend. Oof.)
