Out of Their Hands
Control. I think that is the one thing that we want more than any other thing in the world. We want to be in charge of what happens to us. We want to dictate to those around us and even to the stars above exactly how things are going to turn out for us. We spend hours worrying about what we can do to make sure everything turns out the way we want it to, and even then we aren’t sure it’s going to go our way until it happens.
There is a phrase in sports that refers to teams being in “control of their own destiny.” That is where they always want to be: in control.
Sometimes it doesn’t work out that way though, and teams end up needing help from others to get where they want to go.
That’s where Eagles’ Nation finds itself this weekend, needing a win and some help to get to the postseason. A win and a Vikings’ loss sends Philadelphia officially on its quest for a repeat title run.
When asked about it this week, quarterback Nick Foles referenced Matthew 6:34:
Staying in the present has been the focus for Foles for much of this second late season run. He knows that the decision of how much longer he will be an Eagle is not in his hands. All he can do is stay in the moment and do what he can to make sure that the Eagles keep their season going. When Sunday comes around, Foles and the Eagles can only control what is in front of them: defeating the Washington Redskins. From there, they’ll have to do something none of us like to do. They’ll have to leave it up to someone else to control their destiny. It takes a great amount of faith to be able to do that. Fortunately for the Eagles, they have team leaders that have quite a bit of faith to go around.
