A Roaring Lion

This week marks the second week that the Eagles have dropped a close game to an opponent that many thought they should have beaten. They are sloppy on the field, they are arguing off the field, and generally look lost.

When last year ended, the Eagles could not have been more popular. They won it all, and more importantly the ones that are Believers gave thanks to our Lord and Savior. Head Coach Doug Pederson, MVP Nick Foles, Zach Ertz, and Carson Wentz were all very vocal in praising God for their achievements. Many people bought their books and heard their testimonies. It was truly a great moment for them and they rightly credited their faith as part of what got them to the top. Many people who read those books got to read about God's love and maybe were even exposed to the Gospel for the first time.

But as believers, we know that as the Gospel begins to advance, opposition begins to rise. I believe that is part of what is happening right now. Pride, envy, and dissension are slowly creeping in. It is easy to to give glory to God when things are going well. The challenge for those Eagles now is to remain strong to who they are, humble themselves, and begin to lead in the way that will best serve the team.

Now, obviously not everyone is a believer, and not everyone will think this is relevant at all. But to those Eagles that put their trust in Christ, the fact that there is a spiritual component to their disunity and dysfunction has to be crossing their minds. The Bible says that our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. How much damage could he inflict on this team by stealing what they have worked so hard to build?  What better way to discount that then to send a spirit of uncertainty into the locker room to confuse and frustrate the players to the point that they lose their cool on the sidelines? Nothing is more appetizing to the forces of darkness than to frustrate Christians that are impacting their communities for Christ.

I think the team needs our prayers. For those Eagles that are believers and non believers alike, I am praying for them. I am praying for clear and sound minds to execute the way they know how to do. I think that this will make a difference. Peace of mind brings confidence. Confidence brings victory. God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
