Born for Adversity

You just knew it had to end at some point. The magical, can-do-no-wrong run of the 2017 season followed the Philadelphia Eagles into the 2018 season until week two. Yes, just two weeks in and suddenly people are crying out for better defense and new wide receivers.

It’s easy to fall into a pessimistic mindset. I think Eagles’ fans jump right into it with both feet. I  myself am guilty of that very thing. It’s also easy to give glory and honor to God when everything is going well and there are parades in your honor and everyone wants to be your friend.

Now is when the testing comes. The testing of the bonds of teammates, the patience of fans, and of those that would give glory and honor to the Lord in the good times. Proverbs 17:17 says that “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” It will be exciting to see the spiritual leaders of the 2018 team step up and hold the team together in the midst of what looks to be another trying season, at least in the short run.

The Eagles are a team that seems to genuinely like one another. I think the silver lining in the loss to the Bucs is that it will cause them to rally around one another and renew those bonds of brotherhood. The good news of Carson Wentz being cleared to play and start next week will surely help to overcome the early injury woes as well.
